Informations about the museum
Since 1963, the Pottery Museum Raeren is housed in the historic Raeren castle from the 14th Century. Already in the first years after its opening, the museum provided scientific sensation on the national and international level , because it presented for the first time a complete overview over the history of Raeren stoneware. To the present day the Pottery Museum Raeren is the only institution worldwide that can provide such an overview.
During the early 80s of the 20th Century, the exhibition wa expanded and enriched by the "collection Rehker". These includes not only Roman pottery, but especially historic stoneware from the Rhineland production centers (Siegburg, Cologne / Frechen, Westerwald and Langerwehe) and East German stoneware.
Since 1992, the museum is under professional management and has since then expanded its national and international contacts. It participates in many international cooperation projects and networks. Since 1995, the museum also collects contemporary ceramics.
On 30 March 2002 it was reopened after been closed during 20 months with a completely new, contemporary presentation of the permanent exhibition.
The collection of the Potteriy Museum Raeren consists largely of archaeological finds which were made in Raeren since the years 50s of the 20th Century . It is the only institution that presents the very large diversity of stoneware vessels for each use and in all their variations since the end of the 14th century .
Stylishly decorated Renaissance vessels, an overview of most of the known reliefs and a number of valuable permanent loans from the Hetjens-Museum Düsseldorf and the Royal. Museums of Art and History in Brussels serve to complete this overview of the history of the Raeren stoneware until the 19th Century.
Historicism productions of the 19th Century, especially made by Hubert Schiffer, and replicas of the 20th Century complete the exhibition, as well as the "collection Rehker" which provides an overview of the rest of the Rhenish stoneware.
The museum is also constantly expanding the collection of contemporary ceramics through the annual Euregio Ceramics Award.
Since 30 March 2002 the permanent collection of the Pottery Museum Raeren presents a new, contemporary design. Different levels of information, multimedia elements, tasteful presentations and showcases, audiostations and books as well as a large website give to each visitor the opportunity to learn at the desired depth on the subject in all its variants.
Other facilities include guided tours on various themes, literature to Raeren ceramics and many tourist attractions in the region as well as an extensive archive and a well stocked reference library for visitors.
